He was highly knowledgeable and detail oriented, which made for an excellent final product. He is friendly, communicated well, respectful, keeps a clean job site, and addressed many small details that I believe many other contractors would have missed. I highly recommend, he is a true craftsman.

He gave us the highest bid but I cho… Read moreWe hired Stumptown Stairs, specifically Dave (since he is the sole proprietor) to replace the bottom 2/3 of our basement stairs in white oak. The two stars are for showing up to work. He gave us the highest bid but I chose him because I prefer small, job specific companies since I believe they have good experience and accessibility. He very often seemed befuddled as to how to create the stairs and the job went longer than projected (though it was the longest projection we received to begin with). The stairs ultimately got finished and the wood itself is beautiful but the finish seems thin and uneven. He gave us a can of urethane at the end of the job and said we would want to use it sometime "because the finish will wear off." Not what you want to hear at the end of what really is a small job for someone with adequate experience. He also included drywall repair over an area adjacent to the stairs in his bid, but what he began to provide was clearly not going to work, esp without the proper texturing. I really don't like writing negative reviews, but we spent a terrific amount of money on this project and I based my selection of this company on past reviews I read. Not tons of stair building companies out there, but enough to find people who can perform much better. We were disappointed he didn't offer us any discount for all the delay and the fact we had the drywall company doing the rest of the basement fix what he was supposed to do. Nice guy, but we weren't hiring a personality. A regrettable experience.

Ours was kind of a unique job as we were modernizing an older stair railing but didn't want to completely start from scratch. Dave was super creative and flexible in coming up with a solution that met our aesthetic and functional desires while staying within our budget and using as much of our existing materials as possible. I had the unique opportunity to see him create our wood railing in person and was so impressed with his attention to detail and quality. This is true high end, custom craftsmanship. A cherry on top, Dave came back and did very detailed clean up and polishing to ensure everything was perfect after the main job was done. He's also a super nice, friendly guy who clearly loves what he does. Book him now!!

Dave was the most responsive and gave us an estimate based on a few photos. We were able to get scheduled quickly and now we have a new staircase! We are very happy with the quality of Dave's work and would recommend Stumptown Stairs to anyone looking to have work done in their home.
